This is an ad used by GM, sent out to American Universities.

Apparently we should be embarrassed to ride a bicycle.

A retro road bike is cooler than either of those cars. He just needs to replace the naff helmet with a vintage cycling cap and the lass in the car will be all over him.

This popped up on another thread here or a different forum - I can't remember which, but I remember thinking that if GM feels it has to compete with cyclists, then well done, American cyclists!

What a fantastic advert. It's been pulled, they don't need to pay for it any more, and sat in an attic in Sheffield I have heard of an ad that wasn't even directed at me....

From an advertising point of view.....

+1 (apart from the Sheffield garret)

Bennetton famously took a similar approach and they probably stole the idea in the first place.

Interesting that GM are going so boldly for the smug, materialistic college kid

(I don't know much about advertising but I have watched a couple of seasons of Mad men).

Not all publicity is good publicity.

All the talk I've heard created by this advert, from cyclists and non-cyclists alike has been about how massive a bunch of chumps GM are. Old forgotten talk of bail outs and poor quality and customer service have been revived, and a great deal more talk about how expensive it is to run a car when compared to riding a bike.

They've turned themselves into a laughing stock in the US. This advert has had a disasterous effect on GM.
