Get your rocks off
Due to an ankle problem exacerbated by my running I was unable to do last years London to Southend bike ride.

Everything seemed to have cleared up until last week when I had a repeat of the injury now I cannot ride more that about ten miles without my ankle giving me a lot of very painful grief which means I will miss this years ride as well.

I would take a chance on doing it however I am going to Italy the following Wednesday on a holiday that will take in a lot of walking and has been warned by my wife of the consequences of exacerbating the injury by doing the ride although I strongly doubt my bike would fit there  .

I love running and have had custom fitted running shoes but I think it is time to give it up  although I will at my wife insistence be visiting a physio shortly.

That's really annoying!! I've never got into running, I tried it at a gym and only managed 2km before flaking out!
Is it an impact injury?
Meanwhile, SWMBO has the last call on this I reckon!

I suspect so as my achilles is giving me a lot of pain at the moment its one of the reasons I gave up football at 53 a few years ago.

I love running but maybe its time to stick to the cycling and golf.

As for my wife I had better not ruin part of our holiday by pushing my luck.

I think she - and you - are wise to do so. Short of joints which are physically worn out, most running problems are the result of muscular or postural issues which can be corrected; not always quickly, but usually enough to allow you to continue running.

I went to my GP a few months ago to complain about my painful knees. "Early stages of osteoarthritis", said the GP. "Take painkillers, stop running and do a lot less of everything else." Then off to the sports physio, who poked and pulled and examined the joints in some detail:"Rubbish, there is no sign of reduced movement. A lifetime of cycling has given you chronically short powerful quads and calves, which are pulling the joints out of alignment. Do these stretches several times every week, forever, and carry on exercising." Physio turned out to be correct.

Thanks for that, you have to a degree put my mind at rest.

I had the custom shoe fitting because I was told I am under pronating when I run. Best I see a physio because my doctor dishes out pills for everything.

Ankles are horribly complicated, as I've discovered. Your wife is right. See a good sports physio - they'll probably have more experience of this sort of thing than most GPs. Most likely, you'll be given a range of exercises to do. Make sure you do them religiously. As ASC1951 says, most issues can be corrected so you're not necessarily looking to having to give up running. Hope you get this sorted!
