Im thinking of starting commuting to school but i dont want to put panniers and a rack on my roadie, so what is a good commuter at around the 300 mark - and also some good panniers?

If you like dropbars, why not go for a 2nd-hand dawes galaxy or something like that?

A £300 road bike will stick out like a sore thumb in most school bike sheds.

You might be able to get panniers and rack on something like this

Personnely, assuming you don't have to commute to far, I would get a dirt cheap rigid MTB and fit slicks to it.

What about a messenger bag instead of panniers?
There's less chance some idiots going to start taking the Michael

tbh i dont give a sh** about what the other kids think - and our bike shed is right out side the pe departments office of whihc the back wall is completely glass.

and i need panniers because i ahve lots of folders and on mondays i have to take games kit in so i need lots of luggage capacity.

When I rode fixed, I found the the downhill parts of my commute more difficult than the uphill parts. I was glad I tried fixed, but was glad to go back to my SS or my geared bikes.

How about an Edinburgh Bicycle co-op Courier or Courier Race? Either will be well within your budget in the post-xmas sale. I have the Courier Race. It's light, fast, simple and well built.

It's what I'd suggest for the OPs price range too - see quite a few around town, and they look to be nice bikes for the cash.

Funnily enough, I was looking at one of those on ebay an hour ago. I think it was at £30 - tho' it still had time to run.
