I like this, it's obv. close to my heart, but I'd recommend against it. The skill required to commute on skates is very high. Interestingly, I'd say skates are in fashion at the moment, this year has been the busiest for a long time.

Yes I don't think I am up to the skating - will stick to the slightly bigger wheels attached to a bike.

I'm sure I saw a foldie on the Argos website for about £150. Yes here it is http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produ...c_3/3|cat_14419153|Leisure+bikes|14419167.htm (sorry can't do the nice clean linkys!). I'm not sure what the quality would be like though!

Thanks for that joolsy - I'm sure the quality of the argos offering would be superior to that offered by the ones I saw at lunchtime....they were a bit miserable. Perhaps I am expecting too much. Lost the one I deliberated on on e-bay, truth is I really don't want to buy one - I have my new road bike and my old hybrid but neither is going to make the random journeys I will be doing for the next few months.

Sell your road bike and hybrid and get a Brompton. Roberto Heras won the Brompton Challenge at Blenheim Palace. If the 3 times Vuelta winner likes them then they have to be good fast bikes. Go on you know it's the right thing to do. Bromptons are just so good you could take it on the train or bus with you. It folds and un-folds in seconds and easily fits in luggage racks or between seats xx(.

Cheap, and it shows, but they work ok. My wife has one.

We ripped the lights off hers - they were useless.
It rattles a bit and it's not the lightest thing in the world either.
But it was VERY cheap.
You do get what you pay for - don't expect Brompton quality.
But they're cheap and they have two wheels.

After a couple of stabs on e-bay, a call to somebody with 2 folders (sold) I finally went to Halfords and bought a half price apollo transition. It seems OK, nothing you'd want to cover more than a few miles on, but will do the job. Thanks for all your replies.

It's not too bad, I need to get the gears sorted out (Halfords Saturday), it's a bit undergeared and I do a very good impersonation of Evel Knieval if I 'power' away from the lights - the front wheel lifts! It does seem as if the frame is made of bamboo, it bends and flexes like no other! However it folds well and looks decently made. I'm happy enough although my legs spin a lot faster than i'm used to - still the exercise will do me good.
