the answer to the OP's question is pretty simple.

1. He's riding well within himself on the flat.
2. When he sets off up the hill his head is still pretty steady. And he's carrying luggage.
3. He's good

3. All that and he's on a MTB

Added the bit you missed out

As for #4, I know, that's why I'm using him as my target

The only bit of "excuse" I have is that this is straight off the blocks. Out of my street and bang....the chase is on with no warm-up mile, which is probably why my legs just give in at the top

Funnily enough I always assumed you commuted along Abbeydale Road. You see some right speed merchants along there sometimes. The point about East Bank Road is that I do a lot of training in your area and the hills are too shallow really to get that much benefit.

I sometimes do, though Abbeydale Road inbound is nice for a turn of speed, I enjoy a speedy ride between Woodseats and Broadfield if I've been up to Sainsburys or coming back from a ride out, many a car driver gets put in their place on that stretch

I think I may need to go back to going up St Phillips Road on my way home rather than taking the town route, though in bad weather I don't like going round Brook Hill RAB from Bolsover St to Hanover Way and faffing through the University is just annoying now the work is going on and the ramp down past the SU has gone

I just can't get up in the mornings at the moment for a good ride in via Redmires which is a nice ride though nothing too steep, mostly a steady grind out to Sheephill

I could visit a mate more often up the top of Myrtle Road........at least there'd be a coffee at the top

My bike was fully loaded for commute, work clothes, 38c M+ tyres, almost a kilo each, Brooks saddle, lots of lights, including halogens, 5 front lights and four rear lights, which are heavy, all the batteries, each halogen battery weighs 0.5kg, my tool kit, spare tubes, cheap heavy wheels with SekuClips on each spoke, mini-dvr lcd screen, with handlebar mount, for bullet camera, the bullet camera is in my top box, with the rechargeable batteries. I think I included my helmet as it has a halogen light, ContourHD and a Blackburn 3 attached.
Ah - that would account for it...

You certainly believe in 'see and be seen' don't you! ;)

Interval training, done correctly, is the most efficient way to achieve greater "fitness" in a short space of time.

Thing is you've norfolk en idea who you are comparing yourself to. For all you know he could be a top amateur rider. Then again he may just be fitter than you.

He's got the look of someone who's been doing it a long time (and is probably actually lamenting a slight loss in fitness, I'd guess around 45-48)

It doesn't matter that much, just a case of personal fitness which I am definitely lacking, though having lost 4" from the waist in the last 14 months and gone from not managing 3 miles on a bike to trying to chase faster, fitter people, it'd be a nice progression to keep up with someone riding that way one day

Ecclesall Road/Summerfield Road just a few hundred yards from the inner ring road.

AKA Wards, brewery (as was)

Think I made it up faster today, didn't see my "target" but passed someone on an MTB who was moving fairly quick, but wearing more gear, flapping hi vis etc, thought I'd take him easy, then realised it was a cycle paramedic so obviously used to bursts of speed (though not on a shout)

I'd put myself in front so not wanting to be a dick and get in the way, I had to go that bit faster...

By the time I reached the Uni I was gulping air like I'd just come up from a diving accident
