I came back from Gran Canaria a few days ago, I was suprised by the amount of road cyclists I saw every day riding both alone and in groups of up the 20ish.

They were nearly all in full lycra and many in what appeared to be club/team colours, most were riding black Cannondales which I found out could be hired for 7 days for 179 Euros including insurance.

I was told by the Thompsons rep that although they did not have traffic jams on the island they did have cycle jams, I will give the coach drivers I traveled credit as they were very patient seeing as many of the cyclists were riding 2 and even 3 abreast on narrow roads.

The Canaries are popular with both pro teams, amatuers, ironmen and leisure cyclists for their all year climate, great roads and generally great respect from other road users.
I went to Lanzarote a couple of years ago and took my bike with me, it was some of the best cycling I've ever done

I drove the perimeter about 10 years ago in a convertible hire car. I ended up putting the roof up on the north side of the island as the kids started crisping up in the back of the car. Endless twisty roads going on for miles and miles. I don't recall seeing loads of cyclists back then - unlike Majorca which seems to be cycling central in Europe.

That sounds really cool, something I fancy doing in the near future, just have to get the missus cycling lol.
Have a look at http://www.clublasanta.co.uk/?gclid=CLfDjKjfqq4CFUZkfAodiWTZQw in Lanzarote.
This is actually where some pro-teams stay in the winter. I didn't stay here but I paid it a visit one day. There's a minium 4km climb out of the place one way, and it becomes approx. 7km if you go straight on at the first junction! OK in winter, killer in the August heat:heat:
