Took a brisk ride up the former Plym Valley railway line today. Its a steady climb from Marsh Mills to Clearbrook. Mostly tarmacced too. Took my old Continental for this 30 odd miler. The bike is 40 years old but still going strong. Weather was wonderfully clear but a little chilly first thing. It soon warmed up though.

Took a few pictures too.

There are a number of fine viaducts on the ride.

I remember that Shaugh tunnel fondly. Not sure if it was lit or poorly lit when I was at university down that way, but a huge blast to bomb through. You can hear other folk inside, but have no idea where they are!

I rode this route before the lights went in the tunnel. its got a slight curve and hence was pitch black in the middle. The lights only help a bit - just enough.

I used to go Plymouth to Plympton, then up past quarry, into Shaugh Prior (pretty rapid as I recall!) then pick up the cycle track. I also remember a ride out through Tavistock and then across past the prison and back. Fond memories - thanks!

Nice pics. That Brooks angle looks painful though.

The saddle is well broken in. I like the angle and find it comfortable.

Done much of that route! None of it on a bike mind you and the track was bare earth in them days! Cracking scenery tough - probably my favorite part of the country

I carry on past the Clearbrook turn off right to the end if Im on the MTB. Its still compacted ballast there.

me and the wife used to ride on an old railway line with tunnel years ago (somewhere between rugby and northants ??).

halfway through the tunnel, with no lights, the wife ran into the back of me, bounced off and slid along the wall !!!!! good days
