Er, PCV drivers are hourly paid. I've never had any problems with buses when cycling (and yes I do cycle on bus routes...).

It would be good if the same were applied to the dangerous maniacs at the wheels of buses.

Just a thought, and not wanting to spoil the happy mood, but an alternative scenario would be if YOU had pulled in and stopped, once past the uphill section, and allowed the little queue to pass you.

I think it probably depends on the area. I'd always be a bit worried here that a bus driver would do something stupid, but back home in Surrey I don't think I'd start to panic that they'd do something stupid when I know they're behind me. Actually, thinking about it. Not sure I've ever had a problem with any buses back home (touch wood).

I think pulling in is fair enough on small, single lanes....but on a road like that I think it's reasonable to expect people to wait and overtake when safe.

The last time I was in my local Tesco, I didn't see a single person shoplifting. It's a shame I didn't have my camcorder with me to record this uplifting experience.

The next time I see a small child putting litter in a bin, I'll be right on to the Nobel awards committee.

In all this time I've been on cyclechat I haven't seen a decent post from nickb. I'll make sure I keep eye on his post as you never know. If he does make a decent post will be an uplifting experience and I'll be right on to the Nobel awards committee....:wacko:

I know what you mean; I came to this site after following a thread on another board I frequent where I'd asked for some cycle-related advice. I'm only really interested in the techy, how-to sort of stuff really, but somehow got fascinated with the bullshit going on in this particular forum. I'm strangely drawn by the constant obsession about people cycling through red lights and the desire to not only film the mind-numbing minutiae of your life but to inflict it on others. It's train-wreck stuff and I find it strangely compelling.

It's only a phase - like masturbating in socks. I'm sure you'll grow out of it...

I'd be tempted to send a note to the company to say thank you. Since we quite rightly complain about poor driving, I think its justified to acknowledge the good as well.
I was thinking of doing this actually, as it's hard to express your thanks in this kind of situation, and I'm all for the drivers knowing the effort's appreciated. No email sadly as the company's old skool, so it'll have to be an old fashioned letter.

I do do this actually, but usually coming the other way. The slope you can see starting at the lane the lorry turned off is longer, so a queue can build up behind. If they can't overtake when I reach the top I'll pull in as there's a couple of places you can wait. You never know, it may have been good karma returning as I might have pulled over for this guy in the past.

I don't think it was appropriate in this case.

What rubbish! Due to the RTA and WTD drivers are allowed by law a certain amount of break. As for rushing around and getting everywhere early and leaving early this is a sure fire way of getting the sack should an inspector be on your route.

I used to do a lot of work with buses in London. This was a few years ago and hopefully things have changed since then but in those days the companies were fined for lost mileage so it meant that the drivers were pressured to get through to the end of the route. If they were late they would often find themselves having to turn around straightaway and do the return route. This was shortly after London Buses was privatised.

I am not involved in this type of work any more and I am hoping that things have improved, and things like the Working Time Directive Lee mentions is taken more seriously. I don't think it existed in those days but there were rules on how long a bus driver could work for although they were only just adhered to by the finest of margins by some of the companies operating in London at that time.
