I really dont think you can beat a real fire:biggrin: we have a woodburning stove and id never want anything else now. However, we are lucky in that we also own 60 acres of woodland so thats our logs taken care of:laugh:

There is a piccie of my stove in one of my albums if anyone wants to see it.

Just had the chimney swept this week and got a porch full of seasoned logs, can't wait to light up the stove for the first time since winter - maybe this weekend if it gets a bit colder :-)

We've already had a few up east.

Had the first open fire last Friday. Next day theres the remains of a pigeon stuck up the flue. I just hope it was already dead before I lit up.

The advantage of the pellets is in that a hopper can feed the fire and so the fire run unattended.

I am not sure of the green credentials of pellets as they take a fair manufacturning process and certainly the pellets I have seen have been sourced in Scandinavia so have a few pellet miles on the clock.

I'm not sure wether you can get them widely or any more, but my late father in law used to buy some round things (doughnut size and shape) made from wood waste back in the 1980s and 90s. The blurb said they were shaped dried pulp, hand pressed and naturally dried. I think they were made near where they lived (Frome).

They were very cheap and burned slow and hot, and were very good when mixed with wood in their stove. Not always available though.

Might be worth a look as a cheap alternative.

First light up (mixture of logs and coal) since last winter - lovely and cozy

Now that the winter is almost upon us, we've discovered that our central heating isn't working properly. We were all set to rip out the gas fire downstairs and stick a wood burner in; unfortunately, the gas fire is plumbed into a back boiler which feeds the heating. So it's going to cost us to get that modified, and while we're at it we're going to have a combi boiler installed, and the upshot is we'll probably need about £2,500 to get everything done ... a project for next year, I think.

I've had one of these Viessmann boilers installed last week. Its been sitting in my garage for the last few years waiting to go in and unfortunately the old boiler went down last weekend forcing the issue.

It is a condensing boiler as is the law nowadays but is rated at 90.3% efficient (SEDBUK band A). Not the cheapest but is self cleaning and has a 10 year guarantee on the heat exchanger (blurb is in the link)

TBH, I wish I'd fitted it years ago as it is so much better/quieter/cheaper to run than the old one.
