I bet old Leonard Cohen's pleased with the sheckels he must be earning in royalties from this song, now that it's hit a big wave of popularity. Ironically though I see on iTunes that his own version is not popular; that voice that sounds like a piece of coal trapped under a shithouse door is not to everybody's taste. Which version do you like? I see that most iTunes customers have gone for the Alexandra Burke sloppy orchestrated version; I still prefer the Rufus Wainwright version from Shrek.

It's a simple song with basic chord progressions so it's easy to perform in a variety of different styles. I used to play some Cohen stuff on my guitar - I wonder if I can find the chords for this online?

I ended up downloading the Jeff Buckley version and I just LOVE the subtlety of his guitar playing, he is (was) a genius.

It's his voice as well though. I don't think anyone sings with as much passion and subtlety. It's such a shame he only managed to give us one proper album (Grace). 'Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk' was fantastic but I can't help wondering how much better it might have been if he'd lived to record it the way he wanted it.

Alexandra Burke's version is good but she didn't 'give it' enough !
