Actually not wired any more due to over-exuberant tug causing the wires to part halfway along their length - just twist them together and cover with insulation tape?

Twisting them together would be fine. If you have soldering equipment, that would be even better.

+ 1 more for soldering, and an even better finish is to go to Maplins and get some shrink sleeving. Dont think its very expensive, somes in various sizes and when shrunk onto the soldered cable, looks better and is more (though not entirely) watertight
