Hank Wangford

I've just got back from seeing Hank Wangford and the Lost Cowboys play in Hovingham village hall. What a performer! He's a great entertainer, musician and comedian - who else would have a band member called Brad Breath? A lot of the songs he played had some history behind them and managed to make country and western music listenable and informative.

I'm so glad I relied on gut instinct and bought tickets for the gig. My pal was equally impressed with the gig and we'd both go to another one of Hank's gigs when he's next in the area.

Apparently sexual health and contraception are 'his thing' and he's still working in the medical field as well as performing.

It was a cracking gig punctuated with self deprecating humour, back stories to some of his songs, some background to his political beliefs, and an interval where mince pies, cheese and christmas cake were served.

The choice of name was chosen to exploit the smutty nature of folk in general. He was born in Wangford though.

Normally, you wouldn't get me closer to C&W than Frank Zappa's excellent parody "Harder Than Your Husband", but I went to see Hank and Brad at Radcliffe-on-Trent three or four years ago, and they were brilliant entertainment; apart from John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett, the best gig I've seen in the last five years. Whether he's performing solo, with Brad, or the Lost Cowboys, go and see him if you get the chance!

My friend was of a similar view until last Friday. She never thought that she'd find herself saying that she'd enjoyed a C&W gig.

I saw him last month in Saltaire, like the OP I went on a whim, the show had a nice flyer........... he seems to have been around forever but I'd never heard any of his music. It was an excellent show with a superb band, did he have the women vocalist in Hovingham? She had a beautiful clear voice.

What I found off-putting was that a good % of the audience were very old and were all dressed in grey, beige or light green or a combo of all three. They all appeared to know, not only the words to his songs (muttered), but also the words to all his stories/tales. I don't know is there is some weird Trekky/Rocky Horror thing going on with Hank?

He didn't have the female vocalist. The demography and behaviour of the audience at Hovingham sounds very similar to that at Saltaire. I bet you didn't get served Christmas cake, cheese and mince pies at the interval though.
