I tried to see him quite a few times in my youth as i was into rockabilly . His gigs where always cancelled as he would have a gun on the plane or be to pissed to enter the country etc .
One year i was playing bass with a band in Leicester square and Jerry Lee Lewis was playing Camden town hall . Our pianist shot off at the break to go and see jerry . I thought he was a bit bonkers so questioned him when he got back and he said he had a back stage pass so could get in and out quick time . I thought he was taking the piss out of me especially when he said he was going to the after gig party . When i told him how many times i had tried to see Jerry he invited me to the party as his guest . Still not thinking he was telling the truth i jumped in his car thinking i was just going to get a lift home but we stopped at a 5 star hotel just off Hyde Park where we went to a private floor with a baby grand piano and a bar . We got some drinks and sat opposite Jerry Lee Lewis where i got introduced to him as Niels bass player
I don't think i said alot as i was just sat there thinking Niel wasn't shitting me !
Anyway after a few drinks Jerry said he was feeling pretty tired so he best play a few songs before he goes to bed . He then walked up to the baby grand and everyone stood around the end of it . I thought i wasn't going to look at the top of his head seeing as i am this close so i walked behind the piano and stood next to him . He banged out about five songs and someone started jamming with a harp . I remember thinking i wish i had my bass here so i could join in !
As he left he shook everyones hand .
