Can't believe it was 50 years ago today that Caroline started up from the North Sea off Essex in 1964. It was a bit early for me as I first heard the station aged about 14 in 1983 when they returned in the new ship (after the original sank), and it blew me away.
So many great memories of Caroline, from dodgy boat trips from Ramsgate to visit the ship in the mid 80s, hearing the station from as far away as Malta, Spain and Morocco over the years with their massive AM signal, to someone lobbing a freshly caught shark through the porthole at the breakfast show presenter live on air, as well as the day the 300 ft mast blew over.
The last broadcast from international waters was back in 1990, but they've continued on-line to this day, though if I'm honest, it's not quite the same. Still, happy 50th Caroline- more here
If there happens to be a relay of the station hereabouts today on 89.4fm blocking out Radio bloody 2, it's nothing to do with me honest.
