Hard Trial Run To The Station 7 Miles & Back

Today I cycled to the Train Station to trial the route for my commute to work. I decided there are so many reasons to start riding to the station in an effort to cut down on fuel, the enviroment and for me the main reason to get fit. I'm now a 17st 5lb bloke, you wouldn't believe I tried out for the Royal Marines Reserves years ago, but sadly I have lost track with a healthy living for around the last 10yrs. so it was time to change.
My route to Bekesbourne station is 7 miles from my home in the Elham Valley and takes me through Bladbean Bishopsbourne and Bridge. This area is the deepest darkest downs, lots of hills and potential for spills. I gave myself an hour to get there and when I took a wrong turn on the way, it did indeed take me an hour. In the future i'd like this to be around 40mins. I only had 6 cars pass me on the whole route going and apart from one car all were very good and kept well clear.
What it did highlight is don't forget your drink (I did), Don't wear a thermal vest (I did), bike & brakes need a service and I was all over the road, so I need to work on this. Also i'm going to be walking up a lot of hills to start. It bloody hurt on the first hill until I got off 10 seconds into it. I was coughing my guts up even though i said to my better half "i'll be straight up that hill no problem" i was talking bo**ocks it hurt a lot and I nearly turned back home.
Well I pushed through and made it to Bekesbourne station. However my biggest fear was yet to come, coming back was going to be harder as it was more up hill. Well I walked a lot of this route, but did myself proud pushing myself to ride as much as possible. Again all cars were very good giving me plenty of room (I needed it). When it all went wrong I took a wrong turn and only realized when I was a the top of this huge long hill. There was no way I was going back down, so i pushed on and found a route using local sign posts. I still remember saying to my better half "I don't need the maps I know the route" after driving it just once, again a load of Bo**ocks.
Anyway after a very bad bout of cramp in my right thigh, which I didn't think was going to stop. I made it home riding down hill and the flats and walking up them.
Because of my error regarding the route I have just found out I cycled 17 miles in 2.5hours today, the longest ride i've ever done on a bike in my life. Not bad for a fat bloke (well I did walk some of it). It hasn't put me off I'll be doing this ride regular as soon as I get the bike serviced and if you see a bloke in this area wearing a matt black Giro flak helmet and a Claud Butler Mountain Bike (and new lungs) remember he's in a lot of pain and talks a load of Bo**cks.
I'll let you know when I take the second trip this time it will be for work. PS if you want a good hard ride try this area around Bladbean, Stelling Minis and Bishopsbourne. Pick any route you like, it will test you and its beautiful. Thanks Taylor

Well done for getting out and doing it! Whilst some might not be envious of the hills, you have a real treat riding in such a scenic area with little traffic! Enjoy.

Well done and keep it up - try a riding little further up each hill each day - if you need a rest day, take one. You'll soon be up to 5 days a week, and much lighter !!!

Hey, good for you, keep it up. You'll see a change if you just keep at it!

Q. will you admit this all those confessions to the wife? What man tells his wife he needs a map?!

Thanks Folks it means a lot. Nigeyy she'll never see these confessions don't worry, I'm a secret chat room writer. Although she knew it was going to be tough, she told me to phone at Bekesborne Staion and when I get back home, it was like I was 10 again. Bless Her.

Good for you,

I need to get of my fat bum again....

How secure is the station? I had a friend who cycled to work in the morning and get home and back to work via altnerative means, and then cycled home.

So

Day 1: cycle to station
Day 2: Cycle home
Day 3: cycle to station
Day 4: Cycle home

It wasn't that lone before he was able to cycle both ways.

Keep it up, and keep smiling....

Even if yo did go for the marines:smile:

Congratulations! I know how you feel when you push yourself a little beyond what you were expecting to be able to do... and how good it feels when you have achieved it. You'll feel better in the long run too.

A study of the map may show a longer, but flatter, route. 14 miles a day is a reasonable ride and 45 mins each way is acceptable.

The main problem is to keep at it. You have to promise yourself no matter what happens you will do each way every day for 2 weeks.

By the end of 2 weeks you will know the best route and also be fit enough to enjoy it. It's that 1st 2 weeks that will be the hardest.

I rode all round there on Sunday, starting and finishing at Fowlmead, did 50 miles and can say there are some killer hills, well done for starting, the hills get easier over time.

That's the best post I've ever seen on here.

Top marks to you for honesty and determination. If I could come round and give you some kind of award, I would.

Keep at it, Taylor - and remember we're all here to help you out with encouragement and advice.

Top man.

Keep it up, its gets easier as the more miles you rack up...trust me. You might want to consider getting a lighter bike this helps too. I had a mountain bike for years untill i got a shot of one of my mates bikes who had a hybrid and what a difference it made to my commute. It took me 35 mins to do the commute with the mountain bike, but takes 25 now has i have that hybrid.

This site is good for encourgement as well as handy tips! keep up the good work ;)

Well done Taylor, with the attitude you seem to have it will not be long before the walking will stop. Losing weight will happen but don't expect to see changes 'overnight'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent post and well done indeed. As others have said, it will get easier and those excess pounds will drop away. A few years ago when I got back into cycling after thirty years off, I rode fifty yards up the (flat) road and gasped I'd never get on another bike. Now several years and three stones lighter, I can't keep off the things and Mrs A and myself now have six bikes littering the garage.

Keep it up.

Nice one Taylor. Some nice cycling around Elham, and a lovely walk from Elham to Acrise and back, up over the hill. It's a real hidden valley, lovely part of the country.

It will get easier, and you'll look back on this post in a couple of months and laugh. You need to get a shed, by the way, for all the new bikes and kit that you'll have in a year....
