Here's the thought process so far.......
The Wife (Annie) has finally decided that she wants to move on from the hybrid she has been favouring for 3 years or so.
She has a nice road bike for the tarmac when when it's dry and a bit warmer, but uses the hybrid for rides like canal towpaths, disused railway line cycle tracks etc.
I was in the same position last autumn. Sold the hybrid and bought my Raleigh RX Comp. I have two wheelsets - one with the original 32mm knobblies and one with 25mm Marathon Plus tyres. Fitted a set of mudguards also.
It now serves as my do-all bike; i.e. winter bike, off-road bike, and makes a decent enough road bike too.
Annie is now wanting something similar.
There seems to be hardly any choice of women-specific bikes of this type.
Wish list:
Budget - circa £1K
Reasonably light.
Disc Brakes.
Off-road capability
On road capability
Room for mudguards with mountings for rack.
Minimum Tiagra groupset level.
Annie's 5'4" tall, crutch to floor 29"
We went to look at this yesterday:
https://www.merlincycles.com/merlin-x20-105-11-speed-alloy-cyclocross-bike-2016-86648.html
Size XS. It's not women-specific, so would probably need to change the saddle, maybe the stem also. However, the sales guy devoted all of 3 minutes to us before "leaving us to it" and never to return. About as much use as tits on a nun. We just left
A bit more web trawling found this:
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/invite.comax/24996/90612/
Which Annies likes the look of. Seems a lot of money for the standard of components. I know it's carbon framed but I think a better equipped alloy frame bike would be better?
Dunno what else to look at. Any ideas chaps?
Edit: Gotta find summat now - she's just sold her hybrid
