Saw loads on holiday in Hungary once- they are really stunning birds (always bobbing their tail feathers a bit like wagtails). None around here, I think they are more a summer creature of western Britain- forests and uplands etc. Wales is a good place to see them.
This book's a good read about redstarts. The bloke studied them as a POW in Germany in WW2.
Only in the Corrèze. Deptford is supposed to be one of those areas where there were black redstart but I've never met anyone who's seen one. There's now a consensus that it was a misidentification. Like the Deptford Pink.
