I tried joomla and found it too complex (electronic engineering student at the time) I built my current site around wordpress and its excellent. A small amount of custom code has been required to make it sexy and unique but nothing that took my mate more than an hour in exchange for dinner/booze.
Wordpress can be complex to get set up and looking right but is very very user friendly to run.
