Has my laptop got a virus?

We have been having some teenage tantrums over the performance of a laptop and I would like some advice on how to proceed.
The problem is that the keyboard is making unprompted additions to anything that is typed.
I have tried typing a document with it and the caps lock will randomly switch on and if it is turned off will switch back on again. The scroll lock also seems to have a similar ability to randomly switch on and off, not a problem in a document but more so when browsing the interweb.
When typing there is also the random insertion of symbols from unstruck keys. I had put this down to heavy handed use that had damaged the keyboard but the majority of the unprompted input is 65' which can be repeated a couple of times or up to a couple of dozen times. The constant repetition of the same string makes me wonder if there is somethng organising the interuption and if a virus might be to blame.
I just sat with a document open and nothing happened and I tried applying pressure to the area around the keyboard with the same lack of effect, but as soon as I attempt any typing the symptoms return which I also feel might be symptomatic of a virus.
I have done a scan but nothing was thrown up.
Daughter had tried to solve the problem by prising up a couple of the keys to see if some debris had got underneath and was unable to properly re set the Function key and I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the problem pre dates this attempt at a solution so probably not.

Any help with this would help restore calm which would be very much appreciated.

It could be something as simple as food/crumbs, or dust/dirt under the keys, have you tried cleaning it with a vacuum cleaner(with the right attachment to clean under the keys)

You could try the on screen keyboard. see if that works ok

To type without using the keyboard

  • Open On-Screen Keyboard by clicking the Start button

, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking Ease of Access, and then clicking On-Screen Keyboard.
