Thought he was a goner...

Playing tag with a Condor fixie last evening, and the guy overtakes a line of stationary traffic at full (and I'm talking considerable) pelt. I'd slowed down a bit, in case of exactly what happened, and I clenched my teeth as a black cab suddenly pulled a U-ey right in front of him. How he stopped in time I'll never know - but he did...and on a wet road too. Respect!

Careful on those overtakes kiddies...remember, They're Out To Get You.

'They' may be out to get you, but you can minimise the risk by not overtaking stationary traffic on a fixie on a wet road while playing tag....

Respect? Not sure. Due for a Darwin? Probably....

faster reaction and better control I'm guessing

if he managed to stop then he wasn;t going too fast I suppose

I blame the cab manufacturers. I was surprised to see one the other day that actually had a reverse gear fitted. I thought the only way to turn them round was a U turn.

Technically, yes, maybe. But to be riding in such a way that you have to execute an emergency stop, when someone else had eased off because they anticipated it, suggests a lack of forethought...

No answer on what the fixie has to do with the problem then?

Not really...it was just a detail that kind of registered...'a bit of colour to the story'. The fact that it was a Condor was also neither here nor there.

I suppose there was a tenuous relevance, in that in the instant it happened I thought he might be one of those 'serious' fixy types, relying on back-pedalling only (he did look pretty damn serious), which added to my fears for his underwear at the least. But further up at the lights, when I complimented him on his stopping abilities I did note that he had brakes front & back - indeed, I'm not certain whether it *was* a fixie....might have been a single-speed.

Does that answer your question?

That's all fine.

I was more commenting on Arch's tut tut to "overtaking on a fixie". It'd be IMO entirely justified if there were no brakes, but as you saw both front and rear, I just don't think fixed has any relevance to the level of risk.

Well, I had no idea if it had brakes or not when I posted. I think as a non-fixie rider, I would personally think it was more difficult to stop suddenly, because I know I'd probably be thrown off. I appreciate that a rider used to one would be better....
