Have been told I'm stupid but I'm still smiling

Just sold one of my bikes. Think it was probably worth around £100 but was offered £200!!! I arranged for the guy to come round and have a look. He was really happy with it but was chatting and he let me know that he was new to cycling. The bike had Shimano M520 pedals fitted and he asked if I had the original plastic pedals instead and could I take the clipless pedals off. We talked about the pros and cons of going clipless and I was rather convincing...anyway ended up offering him my old pair of shoes and cleats for free as I was probably not going to wear them. My wife said I was stupid as they were in realy good nick and probably worth another £50...I was just happy to get more than I expected for the bike and help someone out whose starting off. Smiling!

Am I just out of touch and should have sold the shoes on etc? Do people really care whether or not someone is a decent guy trying to help someone out nowadays? (my cinical side says probably not...buy hey!!!)

if hes happy and your happy, thats all that matters, oh and the warm glow you get from helping someone, its a good feeling

Good for you. The new cyclist is probably delighted and also chuffed that he got such a good deal from you to boot (or to shoe as the case my be). You got more than you thought so everyone's a winner

My wife stopped somebody today who had just come off the Sustrans route at Bardney, they were pushing thier bike as it had a puncture. A couple of minutes later I was home from work, they already had a drink in their hands and a few minutes later a new tube was fitted and they were on their way, am I stupid, no, but I am happy that we managed to help somebody in trouble.

stupid, no generous yes, even if you got more for the bike than you expected there's plenty of people who would have just changed the pedals back to the plastic ones like he had said then sold shoes & pedals on ebay for profit.

commendable i would have said but not stupid.

course you may feel guilty if you pass him some day lying in a heap after not being able to unclip from the pedals

You already 100gbp extra out of the noob. £50 back is not really equal
True! But I'm being honest when I say that I only offereed the shoes because I thought he might genuinly benefit from them...I also made sure that he had my number and said that I'd help with any issues and advice that he needed (not that my advice might be much good!)

I know where you are coming from. My son came to visit his old man the other week. I knew his ultimate reason was to take back with him the 2013 Cannondale CAAD8 he was after.

By the time he left he had the bike, a spare inner tube, set of tyre levers, front and rear light, saddle bag, D-Lock, multi tool, SPD compatible shoes and helmet.

Did I do all that 'cause it's my son? Probably, but I'd probably have given a lot of the 'spare' stuff to a new cyclist too.

would you like to adopt another son? Id be happy to relieve you of any other spare parts and bikes you have cluttering up the bike shed.
