Not stupid at all. I think many of us would do the same/similar.

If someone (be they punter or otherwise) shows a genuine interest, willingness to learn and just seems a thoroughly decent human being then I find that you do tend to respond with a warmth, try to help them out and generally go that bit further. There's a bond formed.

It doesn't happen every day but it is, and forgive my soppyness here, quite life affirming and dare I say it beautiful when it does.

I recall the late John Peel once saying about a guy he briefly met in a record shop that the guy was just someone you wanted to sit down and have a cup of tea with. I knew exactly what he meant.

Just sold one of my bikes. Think it was probably worth around £100 but was offered £200!!! I arranged for the guy to come round and have a look. He was really happy with it but was chatting and he let me know that he was new to cycling. The bike had Shimano M520 pedals fitted and he asked if I had the original plastic pedals instead and could I take the clipless pedals off. We talked about the pros and cons of going clipless and I was rather convincing...anyway ended up offering him my old pair of shoes and cleats for free as I was probably not going to wear them. My wife said I was stupid as they were in realy good nick and probably worth another £50...I was just happy to get more than I expected for the bike and help someone out whose starting off. Smiling!

Am I just out of touch and should have sold the shoes on etc? Do people really care whether or not someone is a decent guy trying to help someone out nowadays? (my cinical side says probably not...buy hey!!!)
Stupid? No, you're a champion .
