Having two bikes - one for university, one for when at home?

When WCMnr was deciding which uni to go to, I made sure we took him to every place he had an offer from. Now that was a busy time! One of the things we made sure we asked about, even at that stage, was bike storage/security.

gratts -

Gonna be studying English and French! ;) (all on lit-intensive courses which I'm very excited about.)

Wafflycat-

yup, I've been to all of the places I've applied to, some several times because they are cities I've already got family in or places I'd visited before thinking about university properly.

And yeh, I did have a look at bike storage at most of them. I suppose so long as your bike is worse than the others and more difficult to get to (lots of decent locks) and in a busy area then you've probably done all that you can.

My daughter had a bike at York in Halls and in a house. For two years she had an old bike no one would have wanted and then she had my fairly new good quality bike. She had no experience of theft. Son had a bike at St. Andrew's without incident also - this was chained to a lamp post outside his flat in an area that was not well regarded by the students.

I have a vague memory of thieves trying to take the roof off the bike shed at my halls. That was in Cardiff like Uncle Phil, but a few years later. Or maybe it was one of those urban myths that got passed around.

At UEA which wafflycat is talking about the bike compounds are quite good. I had mine locked up outside and it had the quick release nicked so I put it in the compound. I take everything off that I can (seat, lights, etc) and use a D lock and cable lock.

The compound my bike is in I have been told is the most secure. I am not suprised either as it's near impossible to find unless you're told exactly where it is.

There are CCTV cameras pointed at the enterance and through the compound too which must help. Some of the other compounds aren't as secure but anything is better than nothing.

So two isn't at all greedy?

Of course it is, have you considered the non renewable resources required to construct one bicycle let alone two:?:
Can't understand anyone who would want to have two bikes, I consider three bikes to be the absolute minimum.

How do people cope with two bikes? Let alone having only one bike!

Shudder Shudder
