hello all,

I've been commuting since 2010 and never faced with hay fever symptoms as much as this year before. I also do weekend rides but not as often as I like to. Both situations with watery eyes and
itchy nose, just after 5 minutes into the ride. Is there anyone out there with a similar problem or any
advise? I regularly take anti histamine pills as suggested by my GP.

Now, let me listen to you.

Are you wearing glasses. Wrap around cycling glasses help me without a doubt. Also use a nasal spray (Beconase or similar) although this takes a couple of days to build up to full effectiveness.

I second glasses. A combination of tablets and nasal spray keeps the worst at bay.

FWIW I use Asda's non-drowsy ones (contain the same stuff as expensive ones - ignore the marketing rubbish) and Pirinase nasal spray, one of which lasts roughly 2 months.

A pair of glasses and Piriton tablets works for me.

This.

Oddly, my hayfever has been reduced to very low levels since I started cycling. I've had it bad for about 25 years; yet the tail end of last summer and so far this year I've been less sneezy, watery, itchy than before. I've put it down to being out and about more.

yes, I am wearing riding glasses, might as well try a new one  .(another excuse to buy some gear.) I will check the nasal spray and revisit my GP.

Thanks

I will take on board the suggestions you gave. And it's a kinda reasonable to know that I am not alone with this problem.
Thank you all.

How can glasses make a difference? That's rubbish.

Antihistamines will make a difference and some people report that hayfever gets less as you age, I certainly don't suffer as much now in my fifties as I did from about 13 to 50.

Clever trick but I still don't buy it! I've worn glasses from the age of 12 and suffered hayfever from the age of 13!

Ummm.... its not rubbish!! I have quite bad hay fever and definitely benefit from wearing wrap around style glasses. You are basically trying to keep pollen from your eyes and nose. Another tip people tell me is to put a dab of vaseline around your nostrils which 'catches' pollen. I have no evidence this works but it aint gonna hurt so why not try!?!
Son (12) has very bad hay fever and wears glasses all the time (or he'd walk into things!) - it doesn't fix his hay fever but if nothing else, it minimises the eye rubbing!!
I really thing you need a combo of things and different antihistamines work well for different people. I'm currently back on Piriton although as I nodded off at 8ish last night, I'm not sure that will work well for me when cycling!!!

Went for a ride tonight after work and boy did i struggle with runny nose and itchy eyes. Hayfever season is well and truly upon us. I took Benadryl last year, but whilst i was in hospital with some heart problems I was warned off taking it, as docs said it is too strong and shouldn't be available without prescription in their eyes!
