depends on what you want - I have a drawer load - the cateye LED one I find best for most things (better than the Petzl with Xenon bulb and subsidary LEDs - heavy - main beam kills batteries) - it is light - takes standard AAA batteries which last for ages - moderate price - good mainlight - and good subsidary light

but the 2.99ish (bought 2 in a pack with two hand torches and a full set of batteries for 5.99) that I bought in Focus (now deceased) 3 small LED works just as well for most things

I really like the Petzl Zipka. It's a bit steep at 30 odd quid, but with no headbands it's about the size of a small stone and easy to carry about in your pocket.

I actually settled for a H7 head torch in the end. The price was ok and it gets very good reviews on Amazon UK.

Thanks for your advice guys.

What do you want to use it for? As a bike headlight head torches are not a very good idea as they blind oncoming traffic and do not show up unevenness on the road surface as well as a light that is positioned lower down. They are fine for an emergency, but nothing more. Around the tent, I find that the lower powered they are, the better, Again, one reason is that you do not want to blind other people, but you do not want to loose your night vision either. A low powered wide beam is most convenient in my experience. So the cheapest Petzl Tikkina is perfect for me. For weight weenies, Petzl also do an ultralight one.

I will use it for my Kickbike. I have tried a normal bike torch but did not like it. It really is pitch black on my route to work and so this will hopefully be better than nothing.

Petzl Myo RXP - pricey but lasts for years, has 10 brightness settings to program 3 settings (press button once, twice or three times) so we use lowest level for 1 to get very little light..) good on batteries taking AA's so can use rechargables and can have wide beam or narrow beam very easily. We have cycled with them, camped and been mountaineering with them - excellent with stunning range when needed.

good review of it here http://www.colinfitzjohn.com/?p=99

I am really pleased with the LED Lenser H7.

I am riding through the Danish countryside in pitch blackness but the H7 illuminates all the road without any trouble. I am not sure how long the batteries will last but I have a spare set in my bar bag. I have used it every morning for 2 weeks for my 13 mile ride and the batteries are still ok.

Here is a test of it on Youtube...not my test I may add.
