headset bearings

what size loose headset bearings do i need for a 1" steerer?
is it 5/32"?
just i haven't got any in cages and the ones i do have look too small!
this is bike build on a budget....

The vast majority of threaded headsets, and I am assuming yours is threaded, used 5/32, but a few used 3/16 and few less used 1/8. Could you take the cups to an lbs? Of course if you have the old balls you could measure them.
