Hearing through a muff.

Further to the point about breathing through a muff a problem I would like to resolve is keeping my ears warm but retaining good hearing. I think what I am looking for is something that covers most of the ear but that has a hole about the size of a ten pence piece to let sound in. Does this exist?

I don't know if this will help, but I've been wearing a merino wool beanie under my helmet and I put a buff high on the back of my head over the beanie down to under my chin, so it covers my ears and neck, but leaves my face exposed. The helmet goes on top of that (have to adjust the size a little bigger). I find that the small space the beanie separated between the ears and the hat is quite sufficient for me and I still hear very well. When the buff was right against my ears, my hearing was a bit muffled.
