So after being without heating since the day before Christmas eve I have finally had a new boiler fitted. Being warm is such a nice feeling.

Had to wait this long because we wanted to replace rather than repair. The plumber we got to do it was booked up until now. We therefore now have a new combi keeping us nice toasty.

You don't realise how much you take heating for granted until it's gone brrrrr. I'm just glad it's been a relatively mild winter.

Our ancient boiler gave up the ghost four days before Christmas one year. The family had already left for the break and I was in a very cold house for three days. It saps your morale, even if you dress up like an Inuit. Enjoy the warmth.

We had the boiler changed from a back boiler behind a gas fire in the front room to a wall mounted combi, left us with a chimney to which we had this installed to my design.

As you can see the Moggies love it too. :becool:

EDIT - the berry swags are not normally part of the fireplace, the photo was taken at Christmas. ^_^

Our boiler is 25 years old and from time to time something goes wrong but it's easy enough to find the part and fix. This year something went wrong that had never gone wrong, the plumber said, don't expect the replacement to last another 25 years..... it's more like 4 years. He said that modern boilers are more efficient but a lot more unreliable. So in his opinion I should try to keep ours going for as long as possible.

Ours packed up at Christmas last year (why is it always sodding Christmas?). It was probably 35 years old and keeping it going was getting more and more difficult. We had a combi boiler fitted - what a difference! The house is now almost too warm, and oil consumption is probably a third of what it was. It has already paid for itself.

We have an Aga and we have multifuel stoves in the front and back rooms, both of which are in use every day because we've my sick MIL staying in the front room. On Saturday I accidentally turned the heating right off but thanks to the heat the Aga and the stoves whack out nobody actually noticed; my son came down from his bedroom complaining he was cold and our bedroom was cold when we went to bed but I got away with it. So we could stay warm without the boiler if it broke down.

The central heating does spread warmth throughout the house including all the internal structures and furniture. When you come back from a holiday it takes all that a couple of days to re-warm and conversely if you turn the CH off it takes a few days for the house to cool down.
