I am getting cautiously back into cycling. Tye caution is because I am 73, coming up to 74.

For years I had a Mercian Vincitore, a lovely bike, but it was “disposed of in error”, and I still have the Hanglun titanium hardtail MTB that I bought in the poshest cycle shop in Beijing in 1999. The frame is indestructible but it eats Shimano bottom brackets - it’s getting its third as I write. I also have a Raleigh Classic with a WC5… frame number which I think actually means “made in Nottingham in February 1985!” It was modernised by the last owner and has 700c wheels (good) and Tektro R559 brakes (vast improvement!) with a Shimano 2x8 setup which I am not sure about.

Gentle touring is my thing; I thought I was too old but now I want to try again.

Age is but a number!!
... Says me who has many years to go yet before putting that to the test!

Seriously though, just as long as you are remotely sensible about it, you should be fine.

Some people said that I should have bought a ladies’ bike, or at least an upright, but I thought that if I have any useful muscle memory left it would respond better to the sort of dropped bars, downtube shifter, bike that I am used to, and I have not thrown my right leg over the saddle in decades - I step across and pick the bike up!
