Madders here, returning to cycling for the first time since, well, passing my car test in 1983 although I am a born again motorcyclist for some eleven years or so now.
I am getting back into cycling for fitness, to save money, Kit's bloody expensive tho isn't it  and also to spend time with my lovely fiance' who rides a horse hence my purchase of a MTB to stay with her through the woods.
I'm 46 and still have a decent level of fitness, my job and specialisations as a cop demand it. I have just done the required (health and safety driven:cursing:) cycling course and will be using the Police marked Carrera MTB's provided.

I am currently using an old Trek 1000, Alpha Series road bike. which, to be fair, ticks all the boxes for my ten mile, each way commute to work. The road is fairly up and down and I manage to do in about thirty five minutes, depending on wind. I did find, riding home after a 1.00 a.m. finish that my £3.99 TK Maxx light set was woefully inadequate when it came to seeing where I was going. I hope to have remedied this by stumping up for an LED Lenser M7 torch and mount.

To go with Jo, who'll be on horseback through the woods, and to enable us to ride together on the road, I have taken advantage of the cycle solutions scheme to buy a Bianchi Jab 7300 MTB and an Altura Night Vision Evo jacket but want to know what suitable tyres there are to fit 26 x 2.0 wheels that would be more suitable for mainly road use. I have considered the Schwalbe Hurricanes because of the kevlar puncture protection, reduced drag and reflective sidewalls but I am open to suggestions on this and any other advice on commuting that you may have.

Thanking you all in anticipation, Madders.

Thanks Rusky, the tyres look the biz for road use but how would they be on woodland tracks? I also considered some Schwalbe Kojaks for the road then just changing the tyres for when I fancy a blast through the woods. Any opinions on these for commuting?

As I'm looking at using this for the commute to work I was looking for a dual purpose, low rolling resistance tyre but then again, I also have the Trek for commuting.

Still not sure what I'm going to do, that does seem logical, I guess it's kid with a new toy syndrome wanting to use the Bianchi for work when the Trek, and I have nothing to compare it to, does an admirable, imho, job especially as I now have 120 psi in the tyres rather than the 40 I have been running. My learning curve is a vertical line at the mo.

The Bianchi and the trek are worlds apart.

Trust me, you will still want to go out on the Trek.

(just googled the bianchi - very very nice)

Cheers matey. I did spend a bit of time and sought advice before I bought it and hope that it doesn't turn out to be just a fad. It should be here this time next week. How excited?:hyper:

Latest update.....HR dept. have authorised this now and emailed the authority to cycle solutions aka wheelies, Swansea who tell me that the bike should be here around the 19th of June. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Still cycling into work on the Trek and enjoying it. I just hope my interest doesn't wain.:tired:
