Hi all, joined up to attempt to get to know more about cycling before I spend £400 - £500 on a bike. Just started doing 10 miles each way to work and my beast of a MTB with slicks is not keeping up with my mate on a boardman road bike.

Never even been on a road bike!

Feeling impatient as I'm struggling with the gears on my current bike - it keeps 'clicking' badly when I'm going up hills - its a fairly unloved bike but not sure its worth spending time/money on before I get a road bike.

Certainly my new commute is giving me an appetite - not sure if I'm going to loose weight (which I need to) or stack it on as I'm so hungry after cycling in!

It depends, I suppose, how long you've got to wait till you can get a better one.
If it's only a matter of weeks, I would tend to put up with it for now and save your pennies towards a better bike.
Only a suggestion.

Hi da_murphster and :welcome:.

Have you got a shortlist of bikes you like?

Well if you had asked me a few hours ago I would have posted links to the Felt F95, moser Sora - both at about £450 on wiggle and the Triban 5 for £430 (I don't know much about these but been told they are good)

Also very happy with second hand stuff so keeping an eye out on local Ebay stuff.

But......spur on the moment decision driven by people recommending the Carrera TDF and the 'sale' (i know, i know!) ending tomorrow combined with the 20% discount I can get at Halfrauds meaning I have just ordered a large for pickup on Weds - should come in at £200 and my thoughts were I will ride it until I know more about what I need and potentially sell it later.

I don't know much about this but the version I have ordered should have the Claris 2400 shifters - which are supposed to be OK?!!?

Pay on pickup so I have until Weds to change my mind!!

Realistically, with the extra discount I don't think you could get more bike for the money, so I'd be inclined to say go for it. Even if you don't like, at that price you won't lose a huge amount if you had to sell it on.

The Claris shifters are an improved version of the 2300 shifters (as fitted to the red Triban 3 - last year's star entry level bike) so should be pretty decent.

All the best and let us know how you get on.
