Hi All, just got into cycling. Bought a Giant Defy 1 for my first bike. Just completed 12 miles in 50 minutes. Is this any good?
Want to get into sportive rides next spring so any advice would be great?

Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy and :welcome: from down the road in Shrewsbury.

I make 12 miles in 50 minutes a 14.4mph average. Not a bad starting point and no doubt you'll improve on that when you've got into it a bit.

Hi and :welcome:
You've made a good start.
I just done 11.8 mls on rolling countryside with a cross wind. Took me 48 minutes.
I've been riding since the beginning of the month after one and a half years off due to illness. I'm 69 yrs old.
Take it steady at first and build up slowly. Pays dividends in the long run.

Thanks guys. At least I'm on the right track! Absolutely loving it. The reason I have got into it was because every time I do an impact sport such as running I tear my calf muscle as I have poor bio mechanics due to an earlier injury. Cycling has no effect on the calf at all so it looks like the sport for me. Could not believe how many sportive events you can enter through the year so this will be the goal for me. I'm also going to join a club when I get my distance and stamina up. Cheers, Andy

You're already faster than me ... so is everybody else!
Keep riding, sportives are great fun in my experience.

I had a operation on my knee to reconstruct the ligaments(acl, pcl) last year so no more footie for me so brought a road bike a few months back and now got the cycling bug. I do 13.3 miles in 43 mins

:welcome: Hi Andy

Well done you are doing great already. Enjoy the ride, don't just push the pedals. Sportives are great and you are starting at a good time to get better at the longer distances for the start of the season next March/April.

Good luck
Thanks. Can't believe I haven't tried this before really enjoying it so far. I'm really lucky to have some great country rides around me and I do occasionally lift my head to look around and get what you mean! Cheers .andy
