Hi everyone - I'm Stuart from Tamworth. Just started cycling (yesterday) in an attempt to lose a bit of belly flab. At the time of writing I'm 14 stone so even at 6'3" I'm a little overweight. I've got a bit of a thing for Real Ale and have recently discovered craft beer, so coupled with a complete lack of exercise I've been slowly piling on the pounds for a while. I plan to post regular updates on my progress so hopefully this forum will help me to keep it up. Not sure if anyone ever reads the new members section of forums as I can't imagine it's all that interesting but if you read this please respond and say hello.

Cheers
Stu

Hello Stu!
Of course we read this section, it's the on line equivalent of checking out the new kid(s) in town ^_^
Have a look at the beginners forum, plenty to encourage you on your quest for fitness.
Good luck!

Hi Stu and :welcome:.

We'll be interested to follow your progress. Now, important questions; what beer and what bike?

My current tipple both on and off the bike is....mainly water! I'm going on holiday in less than 2 weeks and after a particularly heavy session the weekend before last (2 days at a festival drinking Purity beers) I have decided to lay off the beer until my holiday - the last pint I had was 8th July and we fly on 27th so I think that's a reasonable break. I reckon I'm roughly a stone overweight at the moment so with a bit of effort before my holiday, and a bit more afterwards I would think a couple of months of not drinking and doing some exercise should get me in reasonable shape.

In terms of beer though, my favourites are basically anything by Brewdog - although for now Brewdog beers are definitely off the agenda (being on their mailing list really doesn't help!).

I don't even know what my bike is but it's an old mountain bike which weighs about 100lbs and it cost about £15 second hand so that should give you a rough idea - I figured that for now it will do the job. Once I've been cycling for a bit longer I will look into replacing it, but for now riding a crap bike has got to be better than not riding a bike at all ;)

It certainly seems like a really friendly forum, I just picked it randomly from a google search and signed up without reading any post but it was definitely a good choice - I've already had over 40 replies to the first post that I made yesterday evening. I've started looking through the beginners forum and you are right there's loads of info in there - looks like I've got some reading to do! One of the other members also suggested reading a magazine (I think it was called cyclecraft) so I think I'll pick up a copy to keep me motivated whilst I'm on holiday. I'll definitely be checking in here regularly before and after to keep me motivated though.

Going for my second ride tonight so I'll see if the hills are any easier than they were the first time round

Hi Stevey - as you're only down the road from me I wondered if you know of any good cycling clubs locally?
I don't think I'm ready for it yet but it would be good to know for future reference?

Cheers
