Hi, I've just joined cyclechat, following reading a few of the threads on there.
I am a road cyclist, who is looking to get into a bit of mountain biking.
However, I don't see myself doing some of the really full on stuff out there, going off bike drop offs etc. However, I could see myself doing long rides, (or even touring), off road over relatively untechnical terrain.
What do people suggest as a suitable bike?

I have been looking at the Thorn Sterling. What do people think?

most people have their own preferences - can't say I am familiar with that model.

for general cross country, then rear suspension is not necessary - this means that your bike is lighter and for sme price, you get better componentry.

getting frame size is important - typically 6 inch smaller to your road frame e.g. I ride 23 inch road and 19 inch mtb - give or take an inch.

what is your budget?

Any rigid framed mountain bike will make a good tourer, and you're in one of the best places in the country to do it, i'm jealous !
