I worked out a coast-to-coast route from Scarborough. Same idea as yours really - first train out in the morning, only (hopefully!) ending up in Blackpool in time for the last train back to Hebden Bridge.

I didn't like the look of the A-roads out of Scarborough and fancied taking a look at Dalby Forest so my route started: coast road to North Bay, A165 to Scalby Mills, Scalby, Suffield, Hackness, Langdale End, North Side (Bickley), Forest Drive, Adderstone Rigg, Staindale Lodge, Low Dalby. Thornton-le-Dale.

That's you clear of the forest. From there, my route went to High Marishes, north on the A169 for about 2 km, left to Kirby Misperton, Little Barugh, Great Barugh, Brawby, Butterwick, Barton-le-Street and Slingsby.

My route continued on the B1257 to Hovingham but you could turn left at Slingsby for Castle Howard and continue with your route from there.

I've cycled the bits between Sherriff Hutton and Leeds quite a few times, the route is a bit fiddly but perfectly pleasant. Between Castle Howard and S.H. is Bulmer Bank which is a challenging 1 in 6 down and then straight back up again! Alternatively you can go via Terrington and then turn left down Terrington Bank.

When you get to S.H., turn left at the mini roundabout (NB It's straight on if you've come from Terrington Bank) and go down the hill through the village, all the way out until you get to the Cricket Club on the right, which is over a mile out of the village.
Turn right. In a couple of miles on the left you pass a farm right next to the road that always makes me think of the US prairies, big farm buildings and no field boundaries in sight! Just after it is a small lane on the left alonside a wood. Go down that (it's only short) and then turn left at the end. In another couple of miles at the T junction turn right into Sutton on the Forest, past the swampy woods on your right.
In Sutton turn left at the mini-roundabout and go through the village, just keep on going past Sarah Cameron's folks mansion (Sutton Park) avoiding any temptation to go any further over to the right!
Keep on going into Huby, round the sharp right hand bend and then turn left towards Tollerton. Past Burn Hall and up to the A19 which you cross over and into Tollerton (bit of a dodgy junction TAKE CARE).
In Tollerton turn right towards Alne.

This next bit is my commuting route, after much trial and error, and goes the prettiest way with the least traffic:
In one mile, at Alne cross, go left towards Aldwark, keep going over the rickety toll bridge (3 or 4 miles)
At the T junction (another mile or so after the bridge) go left towards Little Ouseburn over the humpback bridge and past the church. Don't go into L.O. though, go straight on to Thorpe Underwood, past the private school.
After a couple of miles you cross over the fast B road that you would have had to cycle along if you had gone through L.O., pass the cricket ground and turn left towards Whixley.
Take the next turn right in about 200 yards (Franks Lane) and go into Whixley Village. Go down a short hill past the village hall on your left and then turn right. (There are two right turns and they both end up at the same place so it doesn't matter if you get the wrong one).
Follow the road round and up the hill until you get to the A59. Cross over on to the single track road opposite. About half a mile down is a manned level crossing that will be closed, but with a bike you can cross through the kissing gate beside it. A couple of miles further on and you get to a T junction with the A167. Turn left and in about half a mile go right at the roundabout over the motorway, follow that road to the Bridge Inn (you're now back on the same route as if you had gone via Cattal) - you should be able to pick up the cycle path there (on the right hand side of the road) that used to be the northbound carriageway of the old A1 and is fine for road bikes. Keep going all the way down there until you get to the roundabout near Wetherby. Turn right into Wetherby.
In about a mile pass the Esso garage on your left and the Total garage on your right, then at the mini roundabout go right (St James Street) until you get to the A661 Spofforth Road. Go right then shortly left onto Linton Road, which runs roughly parallel to the A58, through Linton and all the way into Collingham.
At the end of that road, by the school, you get to the A659, turn right and cycle up the hill (it's nice and wide, so OK) towards Harewood.
Once you have been out in the country again for about a mile turn left towards Wyke and East Keswick. This takes you along Wyke Ridge and eventually down to the Leeds Ring Road, cross over and straight on takes you up towards Roundhay Park - and I assume you can find your own way to Meanwood from there!

Have fun!

The YACF night ride to scarborough (from York) went to Pocklington, then up to Sledmere, and on over the wolds - I can't recall the village names just now, but I'll look it up tomorrow. I presume it could be cut across to get to Leeds...

Change trains at Seamer to get to Bridlington.

Or go to Filey and do the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride route backwards to Wetherby.

We went into Scab one way (which involved a whopping descent), and then Hulver and I came out a different way down the coast road more or less - it was a bit busy, but doable, and we turned off inland, just north of Brid. I'll try and find the routes later.

This is an area I ride frequently, and there is two routes from Sledmere to Boynton/Brid area that I use:-

From Sledmere take the B1253, through Cowlam Grange, Rudston, Boynton, hook North to Grindale and then onto Scarborough or straight on from Boynton into Brid. Most of the route is along a valley that runs East to West

Alternatively, From Sledmere take the B1253 but take the turnoff to Langtoft, through Kilham and then just before Brid hook North to Boynton. The route is only just South of the above route, but follows the old Roman road along the top of the Wolds so is more scenic and on a clear day the view is across the whole of the Holderness plain as far as the eye can see, usually Hull, and the most southern tip of the Yorkshire wolds

Or to shorten the distance from Rudston hook up to Burton Fleming, then Humanby and on into Scarborough, From Grindale as well you can pick up the cycle route 1 which will take you into Scarborough. Be aware though of the two major hills, Staxton and Flixton especcially on the route back from Scarborough, there only about 17% but Flixton might be slightly steeper but shorter.

I've been looking at the night ride thread on YACF, and it seems the map has disappeared, but I found this synopsis of the route we took....

"If not youre ok to Pock cos Crinkly knows that bit, from there head towards Driffield. Near Driffield head to Garton on the wolds on the York road and get to Sledmere. in sledmere take Croome road opposite the pub and follow it til you get to a t. turn right and this road takes you all the way to hunmanby, following the signs. then follow signs to filey, then scarborough. "

We actually turned off that last road earlier, but returned along the route via Filey.

Actually, too much via Filey, as Hulver had the detour into town set into his GPS, and we were both a bit tired, so we followed it blindly, before realising that we didn't need to - went all the way DOWN to the beach and back UP!

First, routes were batted about last year when a FNRttC ride was mooted from York to Scarborough.

As ColinJ says, you may not like the A-roads out of Scarborough. Unfortunately(?) the Dalby forest route through Hackness/Langdale End via Scalby means you'll be starting your ride with a steep climb (Hay Brow out of Scalby) before a descent into Hackness, then back uphill to Langdale and the Park. You may enjoy this, you may not. I'd suggest probably not!

The difficulty is that most Scarborough-Malton routes involve some A-roads. Of the two, I'd avoid the A64 as a priority. On the basis that you therefore *will* end up on the A170, I'd suggest this route out of Scarborough to avoid some of it. It also has the benefit of avoiding another Bastard Climb out of Scarborough up Stepney Hill onto the Racecourse Road/A170.

Disclaimer: I've not ridden the section from Yedingham through to Low Marishes, but a quick sampling via Google Streetview suggests it's a fairly standard country lane.

Best of luck!

Roads out of Scarborough to Malton are a bit limited unless your prepared to do a bit on the main drags or you go well off route and do a bit of distance. I often bike in this area during the Summer but I'm lucky I usually traverse it South to North and back so I get more little country lanes to cycle on.

The route Canrider suggests is about the best option, and the section on the A170 has usually been quite when I've been on it. The only part that I really dislike is that short section from Malton to Low Marishes on the A169, that can be a quite busy road and its fast too for cars and HGV's, I cycle it often in the Summer as its the most direct way for me to get up onto the North York Moors and Whitby and keep my distance short without major detours and I pedal like hell from Malton to Pickering to get it over and done with but without some major detouring its almost unavoidable, unless you hook South out of Scarborough towards Flixton on the lanes and get up onto the Wolds and then head West swinging up towards Malton, but at Flixton there's one hell of a hill too climb.

Postman, make sure you send me a PM when you know better when you might do the ride. If you'd like some company that is.

And make sure you call in at our place in Sheriff for tea.
