Hi all

More nervous than a first date, I have a trek 7.5fx 2009 to sell, tried local paper and no takers asking for £275. It is in great condition but fills a purpose I don't have anymore. Have a really nice road bike now so using that for commute , if weather really bad use the MTB.

so my questions

1) Is that price too high ?

2) Is it worth selling on ebay ? (Bearing in mind not in Uk so has to be shipped off island)

Better still, anyone wanna make me an offer :-)

Once its gone wife will let me buy a new update to my stable as upgrading the MTB !

Any help gratefully accepted...

Cheers

From what I've seen Trek bikes sell well on ebay! I got outbid on lots of them & was quite shocked at just how much some went for.
Give it a good write up & make sure the pictures are up the right way & clear etc
I dont think a shipping charge will be too much of a problem either
Good luck!

For what it's worth I think Ebay - apart from the various cycling forums is the best place to sell a bike simply because of the large audience.

Of course, living where you do adds a problem. Have you considered getting it over to a family or friend on the mainland so you could sell it from there?

As someone who is currently looking for their first bike, I would say eBay is well worth it. Seems to be quite a few bikes going through at on or above the going rate. A few I have been watching have gone for way more than I thought.

...but then maybe I am just tight

Selling on Ebay there's a big factor that a lot of buyers don't research the market and actually believe that by buying on Ebay they are getting a bargain, so they end up paying too much.

Selling from where you are is no problem; just contact one of the many trucking companies or independent couriers (not DHL, TNT, FEDEX) who use the ferry regularly and get a quote.

Definitely worth sticking it on eBay - just sold a near identical bike myself - a little over £300, although I am near London, so a reasonable catchment area for people to come and pick up.

Might be worth investigating postage options so widen your market

Cheers guys, will give it a go, DHL quote not so good as over £100 which limits my options. Will look at other couriers, local post office looking at £20. Don't like big differences so will need to poke about further.

Don't forget to factor in costs on ebay. You'll pay them 10% of the final auction price, plus the listing fee and if you accept Paypal, that's what 4% these days (can't quite remember). So if it sells for £300 you'll pay about £37 in fees.

Understand the fees , local paper cost me £25 and generated zip so not sure that this will be any better. I need it gone, for a resonable amount the money is not the important bit. The fact is I don't have room for another bike so stipulation from wife is that this one has to go. The trusty marin pub bike is also under threat :-)

In my experience bikes usually reach their level on eBay, plus it's a great time of year to sell.
I've always used parcel2go.com to send on the mainland, might be worth checking if they do collection from where you are.

Give it a good clean up,(Chain, rear mech etc...), nice polish and take several photos of it and put it on e-bay, you will get a good price for it.

Oh and make sure you clean the tyres up so they look nice and black, funny as it sounds, it does make a difference. Bit like looking at a second hand car.

I sold my Boardman on Fleabay last year.

You do need to be careful of potential scammers and I wouldn't want anyone turning up at my house for example
