There are plenty of good hybrids to be found, and for less than you want to pay, but that's your choice.

Scott and Felt are also worth having a look at, as are many others.

You'll probably find a good deal on shops wanting to clear their old 2012 stock.

I think you're missing the the best option; Trek 2013 7.7 FX. All the tech of Trek and at £1300 it is £300 less than both the Whyte and the Specialized. I've been commuting on a Trek 2012 7.5 FX Disc for over a year now and love it.

Whyte sterling a grand and a very well reviewed bike. Would personally choose over a specialized just to be different!
