Does anyone know any stonemasons in the Cumbria region who would be up for doing a job for me in Glasgow. Probably a weeks work if that.

I've just bought a load of Broughton Moor Slate to do a wall running from outside through to the reception hall of a property we're building, creating a feature wall.

I want it look like the photos below and the guys up here have all been straight up with me about doing it. None of them are confident about it as it's not a material we use for building up here. The effect is almost dry stone dyking and the mortar is set backand you cant see it, looking like they are all just piled on each other.

Just like the William Wordsworth building.

I know a Cumbrian who could probably do it.

But he's doing that sort of thing in Canada.

Neither could I, but I'm prepared to give it my best shot.

I thought I was going to get a sensible response there ya couple of B's.

Met with 4 stonemasons this week outside the 2 usual ones I would use and all 6 are not up for it at all.

No problem

I could ask his dad for you if you like. He won't do it but may be able to put you onto someone.

What are you thinking of having done with it in specific terms so I can describe it a bit better to him? PM the details if you want. I think I can get some info to him via email but it won't be quick.

My bessie mate's a stonemason....nuff said.

Cheers mate but he'll be no good for what I want.

Don't know if you looked at the pictures but how many bulidings in Scotland do you know look like that??

We never did or do build houses like that up here with slate and for what I want done you're mate will proabably not want to take it on if he's honest as 6 others have all said no way. The house when finished will go on the market for over £1m so the workmanship needs to be spot on. I'm a stickler for perfection.

Give Environmental Fieldwork Ltd a call on 0161 796 9557. North Manchester based so price will probably have to include any accomodation.

They work in nature conservation and traditional countryside crafts. Wish them a Merry Xmas from me, Stephen, who now lives in Norway.

If they cant help you they may know someone who can.

Edit. if it aint a rural location they wont go near it.

Greedo, maybe try looking in Caithness where they use Flagstones?

Hold on, I'm sure I have a pic taken on holiday this year....

Cheers for that. That's the style I'm looking for on the bottom part. No mortar showing at all. Good man. Might have a nosey about in that area. Just like getting recommendations though. Don't need to start it until Feb but like to be prepared. Fail to prepare and all that!!!

And there was you asking for help from people outwith Scotland..

There is a flagstone quarry near Watten, Caithness who might be able to help, and there is also the Flagstone Centre in Castletown which is where that pic was taken.

Have you had the stone delivered? Would like to see a pic if poss. I've done a fair bit of dry-stone walling in north-west england and what one quarry calls walling stone differs greatly to the next.

As i'm not sure my old co. could help you what about this fella http://www.drystone-walling.co.uk/.
