It is about 10 years since I've owned a bike.
I have recently road tested a few bikes and I really like the Cannondale CAAD8. I was impressed with it's speed and I made light work of quite a long/big hill. However, as I have never owned a road bike, I did feel a little vulnerable. (I assume I would get over this in time)
I also tested a CAADX. I also liked this bike - it felt much sturdier so I felt safer, but I did notice that it was not as quick and getting up the same hill was much harder.
I tested both bikes in good whether on reasonable roads and without wearing a rucksack (which I would definitely require as part of my commute)
I know I will want to use the bike for a short-ish commute Mon-Fri (about 4 miles each way - uphill on the way home). I am not yet sure how I will use it at weekends. I will certainly want to be capable of rides 30-40 miles in length without issue. I don't know whether I will need off road use.
I wondered if you could offer some advice as to whether I should take the plunge and opt for a road bike (CAAD8) or whether a cross bike (CAADX) would be more suitable.... I have no idea!
Rick.
