HELP PLEASE: training w/ lactate thresholds etc.

I am a beginner so to speak. I ride every other day about 20 miles and every other week 50-80 mile/ one day rides. I hold a pretty ok average for my own sake and the long rides are filled with 12% inclines etc. I want to imrpove, of course, and be smart about that as well.
So; I bought an awsome book called serioius cycling and am finding words I never knew existed...lactate threshold, Vo2 levels etc. even though this all makes me sound really smart and may even impress my wife here and there...I have no idea what i am talking about and let alone how this relates to me on the road....
Can anyone guide me a bit and help me put a training program together that will push those limits and train for specific things....
