Hi.
I have an old road bike set up I was given but it's got a shimano triple crank and mech on it. Crank 48 38 28 teeth. No idea where it really came from but I'm looking to do some work to get it road worthy. Just been offered a double 105 shimano shifter and was wondering if I could fit this and use the bike as a double just ignoring the granny ring. Would it just be a case of adjusting the limiting screws or am I being ultra naive. It's got a 7 speed rear. Odd bike. Think it must have been a real botch job cheapy

For the 105 shifters to work well, the Shimano front mech should not be over 25 or so years old, and not a hybrid or mtb version (which requires more cable pull per click than the 105 road shifter provides). The front mech model name (or model code FD-xxxx at the back of the inner cage) will help to identify its age and if it is a road or hybrid/mtb model.

You also need to find out what #speed the 105 rear shifter is for (likely #clicks+1), if not 7 speed then you need to see if the rear wheel has a freewheel or freehub, and what the distance between the frame's rear dropouts (i.e. the width of the rear hub) is, so that whether the rear wheel can be readily and cheaply updated to match the shifter can be established.

Unless the 105 shifters are really cheap you might be better off getting this or this. If you think you want to spend the minimum given the cheapness of the bike and to minimise financial exposure you could also start with something like this or this.

I think I have sorted the problem. We gave it a shot. I had to change the rear casette to 8 speed and with some messing around we got it to ride pretty smooth. Thanks
