Help with memory !!

I read about a case recently where an irresponsible HGV driver ran over & killed a teenage boy (possibly a cyclist). The sentence was, as usual, quite derisory. The grieving father got hold of a shotgun and shot & injured the negligent driver. However the jury at his trial found him not guilty. I think this happened in the 1980s or 1990s. I cannot find where I read this though !

Anyone else recognise this matter ?
