Know exactly where your coming from with this dilemma..although I can say with experience that it won't take you long before you get your fitness upto 40 miles a day. especially as the weather starts to improve.

Don't know about anyone else but I find that out on these cold days sometimes my tyres feel like octopus tenticles, and I struggle. I think its because my muscles haven't warmed up enough. I also find that I don't really get over this 'pain barrier thing',( a feeling that its all too hard and I want to go home) until I've done at least ten miles into a ride. I've got to get my head in another place and over ride it. Obviously you'll have to watch your injury, suggest you get advise from a physiotherapist about training.

I've been a bit panicie over a ride I'm doing this year in June over two days first day I know will be easy 35 miles as this is what I'm used to, but second day 65miles! sounds tough for me as I've not done two days riding consecutive! I'm going in with the approach it isn't a race, I'm riding in a beautiful part of the country. I'm going to just take my time and enjoy it even if it takes me all day to get to my destination...

good luck and enjoy

Barnet,
The best advice on training I can give you is, Find a route around where you live, say 2-3 miles and do that for a week. Then the next week add a few miles onto that route, then the next week add a few miles on and so on. You will soon be doing 20+ miles without realizing it. Good luck.

Right ok so I got to the gym last night and jumped on a bike (I know it's not the same as being on the open road) either way I managed to do 10miles in 39:14

So the 40miles is looking more and more achievable, so I wanna keep it up and maybe do 15 miles next week..... On a slightly more funny note my bum is KILLING me and any ideas on avoiding this would be greatly welcomed lol

Getting faster, very slowly
Presuming you get your bike by end March/beginning April, then August is 4 to 5 months away, so you need to get out there doing 10 mile rides to begin with during March/beginning of April then up it to 15 in April, 20 in May, 30 miles in June and 40 mile in July.

Agreed with all of your post but if Bowsa is youngish/fittish (doesn´t say on his profile?) he might be able to up the miles a little sooner.
And definitely get a road bike (assuming your 65k is on the road), as if you don´t the likelihood is that you´ll wish you had and you´ll blame us for not saying so! And why not aim for 80/90 or 100k?
Sorry to hear about your mum, what you´re doing is a good thing!!

Padded shorts, you dont have to have lycra there are many choices on the market.

Adjust the saddle slightly until you find the position for you.

Time on the bike will help too, the more you ride the more comfortable you will feel.
