Hey all, just thought I would pop in here and say hi.

I have just acquired my friends bike (for free) and have decided its time to get fit and spend time with the family cycling again.

The bike I have is a dunlop full suspension bike. Although, not what I would choose but I did get it for free so can't complain too much.

I have just bought hubby a replacement bike as his old one is dying. He's now got a Carrera Zelos road bike.

I was just curious as to how many have full suspension bikes and can you add accessories to it or is it best left like a mountain bike?

Look forward to chatting with you all and finding out about bike trails round my are (not long moved here).

Thanks
Angela

G'day Angela,
Welcome to the forum, lots of help and advice to be had from your fellow cyclists here. Sounds like you got the best deal ever on your bike!

Hi and welcome,
Freebies are always good. Never had a full suspension bike so I can't really comment on yours.
However, I wish you lots of happy riding.

Hi. :welcome:

When you say 'add accessories' what are you thinking of? TBH cheap full suspension bikes are generally not particularly good at anything - too heavy and energy sapping for road use and not robust enough for off-road use. You could make it more suitable for road use, if that's what you're going to use it for?

Having said that, if it gets you on the road or trails then that can only be a good thing:thumbsup: If you get the bug and hang around here for a while you'll soon start to lust after something that's more suited to the type of riding you do!

:welcome: to CC.

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, but all bikes are built for a purpose, and as simon.r mentioned, full suspension bikes do tend to be very heavy and energy sapping, but, the bike you mentioned will have been bought from Sports Direct I suspect, and please don't be offended, but the suspension it has got will be very ineffective in all respects.

I personally wouldn't add anything to it other than lights if riding at night and mudguards if riding mucky trails. All things you can easily remove and refit if you decide to upgrade bikes.

All that said at the end of the day it was free, and like my dear old Nan used to say, "I'll refuse nowt but blows".

If it gets you out and riding, happy days

Hi Angela.:welcome:

I used to have a cheapy mountain bike in a similar vein to yours. It was heavy, slow and uncomfortable but was an adequate runabout for 5 years of mostly short trips 'til I wore it out:

I did take it on a few proper off road hill rides. Those were epic trips.

I'd advise keeping accessories simple: computer, lights and mudguard and run it until you either get fed up with it or it fails.

One thing I can guarantee is that it won't be the best bike to encourage you to get out and cycle, but as it's free give it a go.

Hello Angela and welcome. As everyone else has said the weight of the bike is going to be your biggest handicap, so I hope it doesn't discourage you too much. You might be better off with a cheap road bike or a suspensionless MTB bought secondhand off ebay, preloved or similar and your Dunlop can be disposed of likewise.

By the way don't forget the helmet if you don't have one already.

It will do for now. As I said it's not what I would choose for myself. I wanted a hybrid bike (like the ones women use in Germany) I love those bikes and felt great in the old one I used to have. Don't know why I ever got rid of it.

I will hopefully get a new one more suited to me in the future but for now it will do.

Glad to hear from you all
