Lots like you on the forum! So lots of good advice and experience too. Exercise + cutting out the cake and the booze seems to be the best bet - don't be surprised if you gain a bit of weight at first as fat turns to muscle.

All I know is that for me, a little commute (3.5 miles one way) several times a week ( 3 or 4) has made a huge difference to my wellbeing and a gradual, definite difference to my strength and fitness over the last 2 years.
