First let me say that I'm a really old geezer who used to be a road racer back in the 1950's. Used to be that I'd build and maintain my own bikes with some degree of success. After many decades I've returned to cycling to keep fit. Bought a cheap MTB to get started (I know, its all my fault) and decided to change the pedals for Shimano SPD's after the first ride as my shoes kept sliding off the pedals. So I ordered some off ebay.

With my vast experience (ha ha) of bike engineering i knew that the LH pedal has a LH thread and the RH pedal a RH thread. So this afternoon I went to loosen the pedals prior to the arrival of my nice new Shimanos. Off camr the LH pedal no probs. Couldn't get the RH pedal to undo. Used Plus Gas and reaction block under the crank - no joy!. After some head scratching (and some verbal ecouragement) I thought, what if..., could it be..., maybe its a LH thread as well. Whacked the spanner the other way and the pedal came undone! Is this normal now? or have I got a pair of Shimano pedals coming through the post that I can only use 1 of? Any comments, including ribald ones, welcome.

No idea about your pedals (I'm a mere electrical engineer, so if the bigger hammer didn't work then I'm stuck:laugh:), but hello and :welcome:

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Hi welcome to the forum. Someone is bound to come along soon and help you out. Good luck, and enjoy the forum

Your worst fears are confirmed I'm afraid some clown has forced a LH pedal into the RH thread. The only other explanation would be misuse of a tandem crossover crank or a BMX left drive crank, both highly unlikely scenarios.

Hi Dennarcher and :welcome:.

As you've said, the RH pedal should have a RH thread. I too suspect that someone has forced a LH pedal into that crank. Do the threads in the crank look like they've been cross threaded? There should be some sort of marking on the pedal as to whether it's a right or left fitment (on the crank end of the spindle is quite common).

Thanks to all for your welcome messages. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, there is no evidence of miss fitting of pedals, damaged threads, etc. The pedals are each marked with L and R respectively. Both pedals have LH threads and to prove it each pedal was fully screwed into the opposite crank, quite easily with finger pressure only. No damage!

I think I may be going way off topic for this thread, so perhaps ask the same question in the technical topics.

Haven't come across this before. What's the make/model of the bike?

Hi Phil,
The bike is a cheapy, bought about 6 years ago. The markings on it read Fusion & Universal. Problem solved now anyway, bought a new chainring and cranks with the correct thread to my new Shimano pmedals. Thanks for your interest.
