Hi,

I am an occasional rider from Bolton, but have been roped into a 160 mile ride to Cheltenham for charity!

Looking for a bit of advice really on the best kind of bike to use really, as my MTB isnt up to it.
Roads all the way, so would i be better looking at a hybrid or a road bike?

Budget is an issue, so I was thinking if i got a used hybrid I could use it to commute......or if i got a used road bike I could sell it again after the event.

btwin 5 hybrid second hand around £100

Road options would be a kind of Viscount/Peugeot vintage for up to £140, which I wouldnt imagine would lose money if i sold it again (service before and after event has kindly been promised by a shop).

Any advise on what style of bike would be best for me?

Hi,

thanks for the welcome. Any advice on the type of bike to use on the journey? I am swaying to a hybrid for more everyday use - would a rode bike be unsuitable for commuting in heavy traffic?

Welcome fellow Bolton rider ! I ride into and from Bolton everyday on either on a Specialized Sirrus hybrid or my MTB due to Manchester road becoming more like an off road trail than a road ! I have just completed a 130 mile Audax on a fixed gear which was fun on some of the hills but i would say a hybrid would be up to the job for your ride ( i rode to Cornwall last year on mine with all my camping gear) so they are up to the job.Which bit of Bolton are you riding from ?

The Whitefield part of Bolton ha! ;)

Are there any Hybrids, new or second hand that you could recommend for the journey?

Or road bike wise, with the limited budget do you think I would be better with a Vintage Peugeot/Viscount or a cheap new bike such as
Muddyfox Swift

Thanks for your help Guys, I am panicking about getting the right bike for the job!

I can 0nly vouch for the Sirrus as it has been a brilliant and bullet proof with all the crap i throw at it.The MTB is now used more due to Bolton's (and most other roads) are getting so bad !

I got myself sorted with a Trek 7200 for the journey in the end!

Had a ride to clifton marina and back - 15 miles round and seemed very good to me and my limited knowledge. Had a stint up ringley road on way back, but gave up on that and had some refreshments in the Horseshoe pub - very nice
