As a middle aged, slightly overweight (well may be that's being kind) cyclist, I enjoy challenges, but not races. A really good challenge is the 24 Isle of Man Route. Basically park up at Heysham Port catch the 02.15am (yes in the morning) ferry to Douglas. http://www.steam-packet.com/ remember to book online and at least 2 days in advance to get the Day return price. Parking is £8 and taking a cycle is free.
You arrive, after a few hours sleep at 06.00. Then basically cycle the coast of the Island, about 90 miles. Its all on one OS Map. Then catch the 19.45 ferry back. Its a challenging day but a great way to see this beautiful island. And it is NOT flat. Lots of eateries and drinkeries en route. Well worth it and the roads are very quiet as well as in good condition.
