Hi everyone

I’ve just joined - first post, wahey!

Looking forward to picking up some tips and hopefully receiving some much-needed advice over the next few months.

I did a load of cycling in my youth but will shortly be “back in the saddle” come Christmas Day as I’ve purchased a 2007 Scott Speedster P6 (see picture), which I cannot wait to pound the streets on! I bought it from Leeds Bike Mill, a not for profit set up with qualified mechanics who take in donated bikes and refurbish ‘em. I bought my son a new Apollo mountain bike (I know - we allowed him up to £350, but he really wasn’t bothered - he liked “the silver one”), so thought I’d get myself a Christmas present as well.

Personally, I’d always preferred the idea of getting an older decent-ish make bike, rather than a new not-so-great one - and I couldn’t care less about suspension and disc brakes (more weight and maintenance, if you ask me). When I was in my teens I always dreamed of owning a US make (Marin would’ve been the ultimate, but I’m not complaining), so I’m very proud of my modest purchase.

I had to email Scott to ask for more info as Google surprisingly wasn’t that much help, and they pointed me towards a French-language webpage which gave me some specs, but I haven’t managed to find out more about this year-specific model.

Has anybody ever owned one of these bikes? Any thoughts and/or memories anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated.

Ta, luvs

Enjoy the lunacy. Tons of advice in these parts, stay clear of 'what's the best' questions. You'll get hundreds of different answers. 😁

Sometimes the only way with an older bike is to look at the bike itself and list what's there - yours is 18 years old so is likely to have components changed. Leeds Bike Mill, who I rate highly, will use whatever they have in the parts bin from donated bikes.

eBay has something similar to yours - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/197846420293 - which shows 21 speed gears (3 x 7) and trigger shifters.

Yes, that’s a good point about components - seems obvious when you think about it. I’ve already noticed that the handlebar stem isn’t original (I think - it’s longer compared to the “official” picture Scott pointed me to).

I was impressed with Leeds Bike Mill - the bike itself feels really tight and well serviced. They were very nice, as well

I’m going to book myself in for one of their cycle maintenance courses in the new year.

Hullo there! Good to see someone taking in a ‘pre-loved’ bike, rather than a new one. I recently picked up an older Giant Defy from Facebook to be my entertainment for the summer - hopefully yours will serve you for much longer.

Thanks, friend - and thank you all!

Yeah, my Sportster has a few dings and scratches but I think that just adds character. For an 18 year old bike it feels great.

If you need a shorter stem give me shout, I think I have a couple of 80mm lurking in the garage.
