I discovered the condition hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobiaa few years ago and had the same reaction to it as most people - I laughed, but then I looked into it and thought it pretty sad. Many sufferers develop it at school when struggling to read long words out loud in class. They feel stressed and humiliated. Eventually, things get so bad that even the notion of a long word is enough to get them into a panic. It is the association with painful memories that is at the heart of the problem.
But don't you think it's a bit ironic that people who know they have the condition are scared to tell anyone?
